Painting and Ceramics

My work continues to be based around my painting and ceramics practice which has expanded to include the exploration of ‘landscape’ through those disciplines. The catalyst was Rachel Falls Williams’ encouragement for me to take home some of the snakewood ash from Cheela Plains Station’s firepits in 2023. That sparked my interest in learning how to make my own glazes and, ultimately, how to use raw materials collected on site to make those glazes.

I have since made a collection of ceramic vessels with snakewood ash and black iron ore clay based glazes to reflect the Pilbara landscape. They contain the stories of the artist residencies, and of the group’s shared creative experiences. I have integrated these pots into my still life paintings, making a series of five smaller paintings of my pots paired with Rachel’s, and one larger painting featuring a snakewood branch alongside my pots as an acknowledgement of the ash’s source.
